Computer games appeared in the middle of the last century. They were not as exciting as modern games. There were very few of them and they differed significantly from each other. Later, in the 80s and 90s, more diverse games began to appear, which rapidly gained popularity among gamers. During this period, the concept of genre emerged for a more convenient classification for users and developers. After the release of any popular game, a lot of analogues appeared, in which developers made their own additions, but they used the same game mechanics. As a result of this evolution, whole categories of similar games emerged around popular projects, which later formed genres.

A game genre is a set of games united by common characteristics of the game process (gameplay). Usually, the main criterion in its description is the action performed by the player, unlike the genre of, for example, a literary work. In games, this concept is called setting.

Strangely enough, game genres cannot be classified very clearly, because the same game can easily belong to different genres. Nevertheless, such a classification is very useful because players usually prefer a certain type of games and, when a developer announces a specific genre, they can easily determine whether the game will be interesting to them or not.

Browser games are a category of online games in which a Web browser acts either as an operating shell for games, allowing you to play the game without installing additional software on the gaming platform, or serves as a container for an additional virtual machine that directly executes the game code (Java, Flash, Shockwave, and similar). Games of this type are most often casual games (they have the simplest gameplay), which is related to the restrictions on the size and mass audience. Casual games include various puzzles (jigsaw puzzles), simple shooters, etc. Unlike other types of online games, casual games are often single-player. In addition, browser games are popular among developers of commercial gambling games, including online casinos, due to the absence of the process of installing the game on the platform.
